Job summary

We are seeking a Locum Orthopaedic Surgeon to work with the Trust for a period of 6 months in the first instance, within the Trust Bone Tumour Service (with potential to extend by a further 6 months).

Candidates must demonstrate within their application demonstrable experience in musculoskeletal oncology and hold Specialist Registration in Trauma and Orthopaedics with the GMC.

The Bone Tumour Service at RJAH is one of the five Bone Sarcoma units commissioned by NHS England. It provides a comprehensive service in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumours.

It is part of the Greater Manchester and Oswestry Sarcoma Service (GMOSS)





along with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will support their 2 existing consultant orthopaedic oncological surgeons work to a job plan that contains out-patient and operating lists, alongside daily triage of referrals and multi-disciplinary team meetings.

The role has been allocated time for supporting planned activities.

The Post

This role within our Oncology team is intended for a surgeon on a 6 month fixed term basis in the first instance (with potential to extend by a further 6 months).

The consultant will contribute to the provision within the Oncology service.

The Department

The post-holder will be assigned to work collaboratively with two Consultant Orthopaedic and Oncology Surgeons. The Bone Tumour Service at RJAH is one of the five Bone Sarcoma units commissioned by NHS England.







It provides a comprehensive service in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumours.

It is part of the Greater Manchester and Oswestry Sarcoma Service (GMOSS) along with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

The Montgomery Unit is purpose built Musculoskeletal Oncology Unit which was opened in 2016. It has a clinic suite of 3 consulting rooms, a treatment room, physiotherapy room, reception area, consultants office / conference room, secretarial and nursing offices.

Within the unit is Oswald Ward which has ten single bed en-suite rooms.

The Trust

The hospital has six inpatient wards, including a private patient ward. There are eleven (laminar flow) operating theatres, including a short stay surgery unit and full outpatient and diagnostic facilities.







The Trust provides a comprehensive range of Musculoskeletal services including orthopaedic surgery, spinal injuries, bone disorders and medicine, and as one of the UKs leading specialist hospitals, provides services on a local, regional, and national basis.

The Trust is a single site based in Oswestry, close to the border with Wales. The surrounding geographical area includes Shropshire, Wales, Cheshire, and the Midlands.

As such, we serve the people of both England and Wales, as well as a wider national catchment. Our services are provided predominantly to the people of Shropshire, Cheshire and North Wales and our specialist services serve a much broader population across the Midlands, North West and Wales.

There is an outstanding Musculoskeletal Radiology Department with MRI, ultrasound, and CT scanning.







There is also a specialist department dealing with Metabolic Bone Disease and provides both clinical and investigative services.

In the Arthritis Research Centre there are full-time scientists, extensive research laboratories, as well as a Department of Anatomy.

Work of the department

The department has over 1600 new patient referrals a year in all aspects of Musculoskeletal Oncology. There is daily outpatients clinics delivered by consultants, clinical nurse specialists and specialist physiotherapist.

The department is supported by a consultant Medical Oncology both of who has a clinic within the unit. There is one whole day operating sessions and two half day sessions available to the tumour team.







The new appointee will be supported with joint operating with the existing consultants where required and for complex cases.

There are two Multidisciplinary Team Meetings a week : a local diagnostic meeting and the superregional GMOSS sarcoma meeting.

The GMOSS meeting is via Teams.

Teaching

The department and the hospital as a whole has an excellent reputation for teaching.

The tumour team deliver weekly viva teaching to the RJAH trainees on a Friday morning and monthly teaching at the Hereford Weekend regional Friday afternoon teaching.

In addition,





there are regular courses throughout the year at RJAH where lectures are delivered. There are also frequent invites for lectures both locally and nationally.

Research

Research is an important part of the departments work with a number of ongoing studies. An active participation in the unit's research program is required.

It is expected that the successful candidate proactively develops, supervises, and runs research projects.
