Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity in our Pain Management Team for a Clinical, Health or Counselling Psychologist with a passion for working with people living with persistent pain.

The post holder will join a large multidisciplinary team of pain consultants, clinical specialist nurses, psychologists and physiotherapists.

The role primarily involves providing highly specialist psychological assessments and interventions for people living with chronic pain and their families.

The post holder will be responsible for contributing to the delivery of a highly specialist, psychology service that is cost-effective, culturally appropriate and based on best clinical and professional practice;







and that meets Trust and Directorate objectives, national strategic, and policy guidelines, commissioner requirements and user and carer needs and expectations.

Main duties of the job

1. To provide highly specialist psychological assessment and intervention in highly complex

clinical cases where expert opinion is required

2. To provide highly specialist advice, consultation and supervision to support psychological

practice within the team through consultation, supervision, formulation and training

3. To manage and supervise the work of assistant and qualified psychologist staff for whom the

post-holder has professional responsibility within the Psychology Service and to provide

clinical supervision for trainees and / or other psychologists on placement within the

Psychology Service

4. To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the

systematic governance of psychological practice in the Pain Service

5.





Facilitates the dissemination of effective evidence informed psychological practice within the

team and service by supporting psychologically informed protocols, guidelines and procedures

implemented by other members of the MDT

6. Provides teaching / training sessions / programmes in psychological principles and practice for

other members of the MDT

7. Participates in regular and responsive supervision and activities with the wider Clinical Health

Psychology team within UHB NHS Trust

8. To provide Psychology leadership and be pro-active in continual service improvement within

own area

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

- Doctoral level training in clinical, health or counselling psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society






- Eligibility for registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Practitioner Psychologist
- Eligibility for entry onto Register of Chartered Psychologists

Desirable

- Pre-qualification qualifications in research methodology and / or MSc in Health Psychology or related field
- Post-qualification training in one or more additional areas of psychological practice

Experience

Essential

- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and self-management support, as part of a multidisciplinary team, for people with long term health conditions across primary and secondary care settings
- Experience of working therapeutically with clients with complex physical,





psychological and behavioural needs that reflect the full extent of clinical severity
- Experience in the application of psychological approaches for different social and cultural groups
- Experience of inducting, training and supervising pre and post qualified psychologists
- Experience of assessing need and providing specialist psychological support for people with long term health conditions

Desirable

- Experience of providing psychological consultation and guidance incl. reflective practice to multidisciplinary physical health teams
- Experience of leading the delivery of group based interventions for pain management

Additional Criteria

Essential

- Highly-developed knowledge and skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management,





and their application in specialist chronic disease settings
- Skills in the formulation of problems from a psychological perspective and in the implementation of highly specialist psychological therapies, interventions and management techniques that are appropriate for use with complex presenting problems
- Highly-developed interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and / or clinically sensitive information to people with long term health conditions, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
- Skills in providing consultation and advice from a psychological perspective to members of other professional and non-professional groups
- Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology,





research design and complex data analysis, presentation and dissemination of findings
- Ability to provide teaching and training on relevant psychological
- topics, using a variety of complex
- multi-media materials suitable for
- presentations within public,
- professional and academic settings
- Evidence of continuing professional development consistent with expected standards of the HCPC and BPS subdivisions (Division of Clinical Psychology, Division of Health Psychology)
- Familiarity with the ethical and professional standards expected of Clinical or Health Psychologists as per BPS 'Code of Conduct, Ethical Principles and Guidelines'
- Ability to accept and use supervision appropriately and effectively
- Awareness and understanding of the purpose and mechanisms of clinical governance and an ability to employ such mechanisms to maintain and improve standards of clinical practice
- Active contribution to service development within the Trust provision for chronic pain
- Strong professional interest in chronic pain
- Commitment to working within a multicultural framework
- Ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines
- Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, and to reflect on and manage own emotions and those of others, when faced by highly distressing material, problems and circumstances ( when dealing with family breakdown, sexual abuse) on a frequent basis
