Job summary

Responsible for the management and co-ordination of all aspects of clinical and non-clinical work within the Anaesthetic service ensuring the provision and delivery of consistently high standards of care and safety in accordance with Practice Plus Group Hospital Plymouth (PPG) values, objectives, policies and legal requirements.

Responsible for the day-to-day management, budgetary control and all aspects of staffing related to the Theatre department and to support the Theatre / Deputy Managers.

This role requires the post holder to perform managerial duties but also work as part of the clinical team within the department to provide clinical leadership.







The post holder is responsible for managing elective and emergency situations within the department and providing first line care as a clinical expert where appropriate.

Main duties of the job

- To provide line management for Anaesthetic and Recovery Practitioners within the Theatre departments at PPG including management of sickness, absence, performance and discipline
- To lead the Anaesthetic and Recovery team to deliver high quality patient care, ensuring that all elements of clinical care comply with relevant legislation and PPG policies and procedures

Clinical

- Act as a patient advocate
- Demonstrate the ability to challenge current practice, by actively promoting national guidelines and best practice, acting as a change agent where required.

Support Theatre Manager / Deputy Theatre Manager to implement positive changes from updates in national guidelines and / or company policies







- Develop service improvements by updating and implementing new practices and products in accordance with PPG and National guidelines and in conjunction with the Theatre Manager / Deputy Theatre Manager
- Ensure all equipment and resources are available to perform procedures according to the individual needs of the patient.

Also ensure all new equipment is added to the departmental asset register

- Responsible for safe handling and storage of all drugs in accordance with departmental and PPG policies
- On-call rota
- Liaise with Surgical Lead in leading the preparation and checking of Theatres, making ready all equipment and instruments required for the Theatre list
- Ensure the safety of patients throughout operating procedures
- Keep up to date with Theatre policies and procedures

- Post-registration specialist Theatre / Anaesthetic course
- Mentorship or relevant Teaching / Assessing certificate or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year experience at Senior Theatre Practitioner Level
- Change management experience and knowledge of developing new ways of working
- Evidence of team leadership and supervision of junior staff
- Ability to work independently and to lead a multi-disciplinary team
- Excellent organisational, co-ordination and time management skills
- Ability to prioritise workload and problems in a busy fast moving environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Commitment to teaching / staff development
- Committed to patient care and first class service provision

Qualifications

Essential

- NMC / HCPC registered
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
- Post-registration specialist Theatre / Anaesthetic course

- Educated to MSc level
- IOSHH qualification
- Management qualification

Experience

- Minimum 4 years post graduation experience in the Operating environment
- Minimum 1 year experience at Senior Theatre Practitioner Level
- Change management experience and knowledge of developing new ways of working
- Evidence of team leadership and supervision of junior staff

Desirable

- Following sickness / Disciplinary processes
- Experience of managing Human Resources matters
- Managing rota for a team of staff
