Job summary

managing a caseload within a nurse led catheter service for patients who have long term urethral / suprapubic urinary catheters requiring planned and unplanned catheter care.

This service is designed for patients who are non-housebound who require catheter care residing in Barking and Dagenham, Havering, or Redbridge.

The catheter nurse will be expected to visit patients in their own homes.

Main duties of the job

1. To provide catheter care to patients who require urgent and non-urgent intervention.

2. To arrange patient, follow up appointments, respond to all general enquiries and triage appropriately, provide education as required and make new patient appointments.

3.





To work independently with a caseload of patients, ensuring all patients receive a comprehensive assessment, relevant targeted education and planned regular follow up appointments as per individual care plan.

4. Ensure that evidence based, high quality, safe, appropriate, and effective clinical care is provided to all service users.

5. To oversee the booking of transport as per patient requirements.

6. To ensure that the service has adequate supplies for the smooth running of clinics and home visits.

7. To assess the needs of a defined client group, plan and implement client centred interventions, evaluate treatment to measure progress and ensure clinical effectiveness.

8. To identify the specific education needs of individual patients and carers and facilitate meeting those needs.

9. To act as a positive role model and resource for all staff disseminating clinical skills and knowledge.

The post holder will consistently deliver a "client-focused" service which promotes good customer service and effective working relationships.

About us

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment.

As part of the process, new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team,





senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes.

The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High-Cost Area Supplement - London

This post also attracts payment for High-Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,551 and a maximum payment of £5,735).

Clinical Skills

1. To assess the needs of a defined client group, plan and implement client centred interventions, evaluate treatment to measure progress and ensure clinical effectiveness.

2. To collect appropriate specimens (CSU, MSU) when clinically required.

3. To perform planned re-catheterisation (urethral, suprapubic).

4. To triage urgent calls via catheter advice line and arrange for home visit if required.

5. To provide education, teaching, and support to a cohort of patients identified as requiring catheterisation.

6. To utilise advanced clinical assessment and reasoning skills and knowledge to provide a safe service.

7. To allocate clinical and administrative work appropriately to support staff and monitor outcome.

8.





To maintain accurate and contemporaneous records on all aspects of the treatment process and client / patient contact.

9. To be accountable for own professional actions adhering to the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines.

10. Promote evidence-based practice within the service.

11. To assess referrals made to service, prioritise, and respond according to priority, as appropriate in terms of level and urgency.

12. To participate in clinical meetings and patient / client case conferences, presenting detailed specific professional information.

13. To undertake any other reasonable duties, which is appropriate to the band when requested by senior staff.

Person Specification

education and training

Essential

- First level Registered Nurse currently registered with the Nursing & midwifery Council / BSc (Hons)
- Practice educator or other teaching qualification or equivalent experience

Desirable

- Physical Clinical Assessment Skills Course or willingness to undertake the course.
- Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP) or willingness to undertake the course






- Relevant post registration PG qualification / short courses in Urology or equivalent

experience, skills and knowledge

Essential

- Portfolio evidence of professional development and commitment to CPD and commitment to ongoing training, education and mentoring to develop clinical skills.
- Excellent communication skills including influencing, negotiation and empathic.
- Extensive post registration experience of managing several types of catheterisations / urology problems.

Desirable

Experience of undertaking advanced practitioner level physical examination and assessment skills
