Job summary
The Sheffield Perinatal Mental Health Service is a specialist community mental health service working with women and birthing people who are suffering from, thought to be suffering from, or at high risk of suffering from moderate to severe mental health and / or parent-infant relationship difficulties in the perinatal period (currently this extends to baby's first birthday - there are plans to extend to baby's second birthday at some point in the future).
The service has grown significantly in line with national developments in this field over the last 10 years,
and the current makeup of the service is a multi-disciplinary staff team of nearly 40 staff from over 14 different professional groups delivering a wide range of evidence-based care and treatment to around 500 women / birthing people and their families per year.
As part of this development journey, the service has become adept at welcoming people who have never worked in perinatal mental healthcare before into the team.
Excellent induction, specialist training, support, supervision, and coaching / mentoring are all provided, and will be warmly offered to this new team member.
The team has a lot of experienced staff and leaders, and this person will join a supportive, collaborative, and well-structured senior leadership team and clinical service.

Knowledge
Essential
- Passion and skill in the engagement of distressed and traumatised female patients and their families.
- Collaborative, inclusive and service user focused approach to assessment and formulation / diagnosis.
- Clear, evidence-based approach to risk assessment and management
- Ability to appraise complex, multi-faceted information from various sources and bring together into a shared, coherent understanding.
- Creative and collaborative approach to planning and delivering interventions and care plans.
- Strong, compassionate leadership skills.
- Ability to supervise and proactively lead junior staff.
- Awareness of the commissioning arrangements in the service and the broader national expectations for the specialism of PNMH.
- Ability to interpret published research and to apply research findings to clinical practice.
- Trauma informed clinical approach.
Desirable
- Expert in prescribing in the perinatal period.
- Knowledge of best practice and evidence relating to this clinical specialism (including risks).
- Good working knowledge of attachment, infant mental health, and infant development.

Qualifications
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice.
- Inclusion on the Specialist Register or eligibility for inclusion.
- Certificate of Completion of Training in General Adult Psychiatry (ST6 trainees should be within six months of attainment at the time of the interview) or CESR equivalent.
- Section 12 (2) MHA 1983 approved.
- Approved Clinician (AC) status / eligibility to be on the AC register.
Desirable
- MRCPsych or equivalent.
- MD, Other professional qualification ( MSc)
- Coaching training
- Leadership training
- Training in evidence-based interventions for Perinatal Mental Health patients.
Experience
Essential
- Experience in General Adult Psychiatry.
Experience working with women in the perinatal period.
- Experience of leading a multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience in teaching undergraduates and postgraduates.
- Evidence of experience in medical audit and understanding of principles of clinical governance
Desirable
- Experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist in a Perinatal Mental Health Service.
- Experience working with parent-infant relationships.
- Experience leading a community mental health service.
- Teaching / presentation experience (, conference presentation, EBM, research experience) to a range of audiences.
- Experience networking and building collaborative working relationships across a range of stakeholders / other clinical specialisms to improve patient care pathways and experience.
