About us

Trust Vision and Values

The post holder is expected to have a clear understanding of how this post contributes to the achievement of the Trust's vision :

Our vision as an organisation is to provide outstanding care, every time.

In 2019, we published a five-year strategy which sets out how we plan to achieve this - whilst also giving everyone connected with St George's clarity about our aims and ambitions for the future.

Our strategy is designed to drive decision-making across our two main sites at St George's Hospital in Tooting, and Queen Mary's Hospital in Roehampton plus services we run in the community.

With over 9,000 dedicated staff caring for patients around the clock, we are the largest healthcare provider in southwest London.

St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of 1.3 million across southwest London. A large number of services, such as cardiothoracic medicine and surgery, neurosciences and renal transplantation, also cover significant populations from Surrey and Sussex, totalling around 3.5 million people.

The trust also provides care for patients from a larger catchment area in southeast England, for specialties such as complex pelvic trauma.

Other services treat patients from all over the country, such as family HIV care and bone marrow transplantation for non-cancer diseases.

The trust also provides a nationwide state-of-the-art endoscopy training centre.

Main Duties and Job Plan

Please see the Job Summary section above for a description of the expected duties of the post-holder. The job plan will be fully annualised.

Current job planning guidance at St Georges expects consultants to work a minimum of 42 clinical weeks per year. There is flexibility in the number of PA commitments that existing consultants offer to the trust and applicants wishing to work less than 10 PAs are encouraged to apply.

The post holder will be required to participate in the NICU consultant on-call rota. There are 2 rotas on each unit that run in parallel.

The first, so-called 1st on rota is a seven-day duty period running Monday to Monday, including Saturday and Sunday nights.

The 2nd on rota provides for second consultant weekday cover and includes that weekday night.

The post holder will have the option of spending a portion of Direct Clinical Care with the Critical Care Outreach service, which provides 7-day a week 07 : 45 to 17 : 45 consultant cover.

There is also the opportunity to be involved with the SW London Adult Critical Care Transfer Service and the ICU Survivorship Service.

There is prospective cover for all rotas, hence the post holder is expected to liaise with their consultant colleagues in providing internal cover for annual, study and professional leave, and this may require some flexibility in the post holders hours.

The post holder is expected to be flexible both in terms of session and day of the week for additional ICU clinical and supporting work.
