Job summary

Corneal Ophthalmic Practitioner

Band 6 in training, Band 7 on successful completion of training.

Full time ( hours)

The Ophthalmology department is looking for a professional who is motivated and hardworking to expand the corneal service under the supervision of the Cornea Consultant.

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and motivated, team of Ophthalmic practitioners who work alongside the Consultant Ophthalmologists, Nursing Service and Orthoptic department.

The Eye Department includes specialists in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Motility, Glaucoma, Corneal, Macular, Retina and Oculoplastics.







It is a very busy and expanding department which is constantly striving for improvements in patient care and as a part of the team you will be actively involved in developing our service for the future.

Main duties of the job

The Corneal Practitioner will be responsible for providing practitioner led support to the Corneal service. Competency based skills, experience and evidence of study in ophthalmology are essential along with an interest in the sub-specialty of Cornea care.

It is essential that the applicant must enjoy both working with patients and as part of a multidisciplinary team. The applicant must be able to demonstrate an ability to undertake personal study, achieve training by set deadlines and are current in mandatory hospital training.

They should also hold a degree qualification and have had previous experience in an Ophthalmic outpatient department as an ophthalmic nurse, orthoptist or optometrist.

The working week follows a 6 week rota cycle and may include Saturdays and evening clinics.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

- Relevant professional qualification and full NMC registration
- Completed relevant Ophthalmic qualification

Desirable

- Masters level of study in advanced practice / or working towards
- Independent / supplementary prescriber (or a willingness to undertake the study)

Knowledge

Essential

- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
- Ability to advise on the smooth running of specialist ophthalmic services
- Awareness of mental health,





child protection and safeguarding vulnerable adult issues
- Awareness of current ophthalmic developments and initiatives

Desirable

- Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibility at local, regional and national levels
- Advanced clinical assessment skills including history taking

Experience

Essential

- Extensive proven post registration experience
- Experience of having participated in service improvement activates including audit and research
- Experience of having provided mentorship and / or coaching to other staff

Communication

Essential

- Demonstrates effective and inclusive communication skills, being able to listen and act appropriately
- Demonstrate ability to build effective multi-disciplinary team working within own speciality and others,





within the organisation and across the wider healthcare community

Organisational

Essential

- Ability to prioritise workloads both clinical and non clinical when subjected to conflicting pressures
- Able to meet expectations of the competency training within a set timeframe
- Able to meet and / or exceed goals and targets whilst delivering high quality patient care

Desirable

- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
