Job summary

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist as part of departmental expansion and continued development of specialised services.

The successful candidate will join a friendly and progressive team of gastroenterologists.

We currently have 8 substantive consultants and are looking to appoint one more.

We are supported by :

2 Gastroenterology specialist trainees, 1 Trust grade and 2 senior clinical fellows. There are 8 doctors at Fy1 / FY2 / CF and GPVTS level.

A team of Specialist Nurses; 3 IBD nurses, 3 liver nurses, 3 alcohol nurses, 2 upper GI / HPB cancer nurses and 1 nutrition nurse.

There are 4 Clinical Endoscopists - as well as OGD,





Flexi sig and colonoscopy activity they also provide a trans nasal endoscopy service and have attended train the trainer courses and support endoscopy training of our Registrars.

Main duties of the job

o Take responsibility for patients under your care.

o Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialities within the Trust and Primary Care.

o Participate in the development of the gastroenterology service, treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of gastroenterology conditions.

o Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.

o Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the speciality.

o Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance,





Risk Management and Clinical Audit - including the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.

o Ensure own practice is up to date; this includes responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and Appraisal.

o Participate in the GI bleed OOH rota.

o Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.

There is no General Medicine on call component to this job.

Proposed Job Plan

The proposed job plan splits the workload into ward weeks and elective weeks.





A final job plan will be agreed following discussion with the successful candidate and the Clinical Director but examples of what the elective weeks & hot week will look like are : -

Ward week : 2 out of 7 weeks

During this week the consultant will be responsible for in-patients on the GI ward, doing daily ward rounds and in-reach Monday - Friday.

A consultant ward round will also be done on a Saturday morning. The consultant will also provide clinical supervision for trainees.

One week out of these two ward weeks will involve being on call for GI bleeds.

Example Proposed Job Plan ward weeks

MondaySaturday Hot Week - occurs 1 in 7

Monday Friday 1630

Each day will start with a board round followed by a ward round on the base ward.





The ward round will typically finish by lunchtime and then the consultant will provide in-reach into wards and complete patient related admin.

Saturday 0900-1200 there will be a ward round on the base ward.

Elective work 5 out of 7 weeks (Annual & study leave taken over these weeks)

Example activity :

2 PA Endoscopy sessions

3 PA clinics

PA MDT

DCC admin

3 SPA personal revalidation + negotiable to fulfil Trust requirements

The job averages out to 10 PAs per week with increased SPA during the elective weeks compared with hot week.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

- Basic Medical Degree
- Full MRCP or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via : - o CCT (Proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) or o CESR






- JAG accreditation for diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy
- JAG accreditation for independent colonoscopy
- Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Gastroenterology (or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview)
- ALS (Adult Life Support) within last 3 years
- GMC Registration

Desirable

Higher Medical Degree

CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS & EXPERIENCE

Essential

- Must possess a wide experience in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine at senior level
- Independent in therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy
- Must possess a wide clinical experience including MDT working
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
- Demonstrate understanding of the Trust's strategic objectives
- Have a personal vision for future clinical services based on experience
- Evidence of effective communication with a wide range of stakeholders and patients
- Ability to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures
- Evidence of promoting a positive safety culture within own practise
- Have good personal insight and be able to manage constructive criticism and advice
- Be able to hold clinical colleagues to account
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems

Desirable

- Experience of clinical leadership within the team
- Evidence of engagement and understanding in clinical governance
- Ability to use the evidence base including clinical audit and QI to support decision-making and service development
- Evidence of research experience and published work
