Job overview

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic Consultant Gastroenterologist as part of departmental expansion and continued development of specialised services.

The successful candidate will join a friendly and progressive team of Gastroenterologists and will be encouraged to develop a sub-speciality interest to complement the existing team and to support further development of the service.

We currently have 8 substantive consultants and 1 locum consultant and aresupported by :

o 2 Gastroenterology specialist trainees, 1 Trust grade and 2 senior clinical fellows.

There are 8 doctors at FY1 / FY2 / CF and GPVTS level.

o A team of Specialist Nurses; 3 IBD nurses, 3 liver nurses,





3 alcohol nurses, 2 upper GI / HPB cancer nurses and 1 nutrition nurse.

o There are 4 Clinical Endoscopists - as well as OGD, Flexi sig and colonoscopy activity they also provide a trans nasal endoscopy service and have attended train the trainer courses and support endoscopy training of our Registrars.

Trust, is a member of the Black country ICS and has close links with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Walsall forms part of the Birmingham hepatitis C ODN and most patients are treated locally either from out-patients or in the community clinic.

Key responsibilities of the post :

o Take responsibility for patients under your care.

o Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialities within the Trust and Primary Care.







o Participate in the development of the gastroenterology service, treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of gastroenterology conditions.

o Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.

o Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the speciality.

o Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit - including the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.

o Ensure own practice is up to date; this includes responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and Appraisal.







o Participate in the GI bleed OOH rota.

o Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.

There is no General Medicine on call component to this job.

As well as OGDs, lower GI endoscopies and ERCP then TNE, EUS, spyglass ,capsule endoscopies and high resolution oesophageal pH and manometry studies are undertaken.

There are 2 endoscopy GA lists scheduled / month. Outpatient services are provided from a modern outpatient department. The new to follow up ratio is usually 1 : 2, however the new appointees would be encouraged to have their clinic rules depending on their specialist interest with adequate time for patients as stipulated by the Royal College of Physicians.

A typical 4-hour clinic for a single consultant would have 4 new patients and 7 follow up patients. Patients requiring biologics / iron infusions or therapeutic paracentesis are treated in the Medical Day Case Unit.

Proposed Job Plan The proposed job plan splits the workload into a hot week and elective weeks. A final job plan will be agreed following discussion with the successful candidate and the Clinical Director but examples of what the elective week & hot week will look like are : - Hot week : 1 in 7 weeks During this week the consultant will be responsible for in-patients on the GI ward, doing daily ward rounds and in-reach Monday - Friday.

A consultant ward round will also be done on a Saturday morning. The consultant will also provide clinical supervision for trainees and be on call for GI bleeds.

Example Proposed Job Plan - Hot Weeks MondaySaturday Hot Week - occurs 1 in 7 Monday Friday 1630 Each day will start with a board round followed by a ward round on the base ward.

The ward round will typically finish by lunchtime and then the consultant will provide in-reach into wards and complete patient related admin.

Saturday 0900-1200 there will be a ward round on the base ward. Total PAs attributable to predictable component of ward work equates to 11 PAs.

Overall job plan is DCC & SPA There will be consideration of time off in lieu. Education In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.

Personal Circumstances

Essential

- Full GMC Registration and Licensable to Practice
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and within a multi-disciplinary team
- Able to travel throughout the borough during the working day.
- Appropiate Immigration Status

Clinical Experience

Essential

- Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Gastroenterology (or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview)
- Must possess a wide experience in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine at senior level
- Independent in therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy

Clinical Effectiveness

Essential

- Experience of conducting clinical audit / QI project
- Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making, prompt decision making and handling of complaints

Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience

Essential

- Ability to teach clinical skills to medical staff / students and other disciplines
- An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
- Evidence of research experience & published work

- Basic Medical Degree
- Full MRCP or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Gastroenterology
- JAG accreditation for diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy and for independent colonoscopy
- Current ALS qualification, within the last 3 years or requirement to obtain within 3 months of appointment
