Main duties of the job

There is an exciting opportunity for a pharmacy technician or science manufacturing technician to become part of the clinical trials pharmacy aseptic team focusing on the delivery of aseptic clinical trials at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, by working in our oncology, CIVAS and advanced therapy units.

The role will involve set-up,





preparation and dispensing of aseptic products for clinical trials and building worksheets on our in-house compounding system to allow the safe and efficient manufacture of clinical are looking for either a current band 5 with relevant experience, or will offer you a band 4 progression role with support to develop competencies and skills to become a band 5.

Due to the nature of this role and service, this role is on-site for 5 days a week (Monday-Friday). Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need, and we will explore what's possible for the role and service

UHS hosts a large variety of studies, including novel cell therapies and phase 1 trials, for various specialities such as cancer, neurology, ophthalmology, and haematology.

You will work closely with the specialist pharmacist teams in clinical trials, advanced therapies, haematology / oncology and our technical services team,





and the research teams to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of investigational medicinal products (IMPs) in compliance with regulatory standards and protocols.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Responsibilities : You will be responsible for organising daily clinical trials workload to ensure the requirements of the service are met, prepare & dispense aseptic products for clinical trials (including chemotherapy and advance medicinal products), and build & maintain up to date Clinical Trials an overview of the main duties and to understand the day-to-day responsibilities in more detail, please see the Job Description and Additional Information Sheet documents also attached.

This role will also involve a weekend working commitment in the aseptic units,





which would be half a day every 6 weeks.

What experience / skills are needed : Pre- and in-process checking within aseptic unit(s) (PIPC) accreditation, or willingness to work towards this qualification.

You will need great attention to detail, organisational skills, knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and be passionate about providing high standards of patient care to patients enrolled on clinical trials.

Essential

- Registered pharmacy technician in UK by GPhC / registered Science Manufacturing Technician (Apprenticeship Standard- Level 3 Diploma in the Principles of Aseptic Pharmaceuticals processing) in UK by the Science Council or working towards qualifications suitable for registration as a pharmacy technician / Science Manufacturing Technician (Apprenticeship Standard) with the GPhC / Science Council within the next six months.






- Numerate and literate GCSE in Maths and English A* to C or equivalent or IELTS test score 7 as required by GPhC if overseas candidate

Desirable

Additional pharmacy qualifications Completed APTUK Foundation Framework Management training Practice supervisor or TAQA Medicines Management qualification PIPC ACPT

Previous or relevant experience necessary band 4

Essential

- Accurate dispensing of medicines (in hospital or community pharmacy or aseptics)
- Dealing with customers and / or patients
- Maintaining continuous professional development requirements or training portfolio

Desirable

- Hospital pharmacy experience
- Stock control / ordering experience
- Providing a ward-based medicines management service
- Aseptic pharmacy experience






- Clinical trials or research experience
- Experience of using JAC or similar pharmacy based computer systems

- Registered pharmacy technician in UK by GPhC / registered Science Manufacturing Technician (Apprenticeship Standard- Level 3 Diploma in the Principles of Aseptic Pharmaceuticals processing) in UK by the Science Council
- Numerate and literate GCSE in Maths and English A* to C or equivalent or IELTS test score 7 as required by GPhC if overseas candidate
- One of the following additional pharmacy qualifications - Accredited Checking PT (ACPT) Pre and In Processing Checking (PIPC) medicine management accreditation , TAQA assessor , CIPS level 4, foundation management or equivalent demonstrable experience of day to day operational management of staff and workload
- Experience of staff management / operational workload supervision
- Additional pharmacy qualifications Completed APTUK Foundation Framework Foundation management or other recognised management qualification or demonstrable management experience TAQA Medicines Management qualification PIPC ACPT CIPS level 4

Desirable

Completion of Practice supervisor programme or equivalent.
