Job summary

Applications are invited for a Clinical Orthopaedic Fellow (at registrar level) this is an exciting opportunity to gain comprehensive experience and training in Trauma & Orthopaedics at University College Hospital.

As each of our consultants' has their specific sub-specialty interest, the candidate may be able to preference the area of their sub-specialty interest to match that of their consultant supervisor (depending on availability), giving the fellow exposure to clinics and elective operating in that particular area.

The Fellow will be working alongside a team of sixteen consultant surgeons, who collaborate closely with musculoskeletal radiologists, anaesthetists,





physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

The candidate must be post MRCS, have at least 36 months Orthopaedic experience and have obtained full registration with the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.

Main duties of the job

Your job plan is anticipated to contain 9-10 clinical sessions per week on average to be carried out on UCLH sites.

UCH Fellowships are clinically-based specialist posts intended to give candidates hands on experience and a wide exposure to current techniques in trauma and orthopaedic has a busy trauma operative workload is delivered on all day Consultant supervised trauma lists during the week, with excellent experience to be gained in routine and complex cases.

You will also have the opportunity to gain exposure to our highly specialist elective workload delivered by Consultants who are experts in their given specialist areas.

Ward round activities within the department are expected to be undertaken prior to the start of the programmed activities

- The Fellow, like all members of staff is expected to develop professional and harmonious working relationships with all members of the nursing, professional, technical and managerial staff with whom they have contact during the performance of their duties and to follow the Hospitals Code of Ethics and Hospital Policies.
- To provide medical and surgical care for patients in the department while in the clinics, in theatre and on the wards.
- To meet with the respective consultants for advice and to maintain continuity of care.
- To ensure that the junior staff (SpRs, STs and RMO on-call) are informed of all relevant issues regarding patients.






- To follow the instructions given by and liaise with the Consultants in charge of each particular patient at all times.
- The Fellow will work under supervision of a consultant but will be given the opportunity to undertake clinics and operating lists independently if the appropriate competencies are met.

Other Programmed Activities Supporting activities will include clinical governance, audit, teaching and management and will be programmed in agreement with the Clinical Director.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

- Eligible for full GMC Registration and possess MRCS (or equivalent)
- Clinical Knowledge commensurate with ST3-4 trauma and orthopaedic surgery training

Higher Academic Degree

- The ability to undertake and manage clinical audits including supervision of junior staff.
- Use of databases and hospital EPR / CDR / PACS systems to a competent level.

Personal Qualities

- Ability, enthusiasm and commitment to teach in a clinical setting.
- Ability to motivate, inspire and support multi-professional team and be able to work effectively and sensitively within such teams.
- Ability to engage / implement NHS strategy, service redesign to achieve the 18 week target.
