Job summary

There is an exciting opportunity to join the paediatric nursing team at Cambridge University Hospital (CUH) as a Paediatric Apheresis Clinical Nurse Specialist.

This role is within the paediatric service and will be supported by both paediatrics and the existing Apheresis team based at CUH.

This role will support the newly commissioned paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Service and will be responsible for all children and young people who require apheresis as part of their care.

Children's services at CUH cares for both the local population as well as those children and young people who require tertiary care from across the East of England.







The unit has multiple in-patient ward and outpatient services as well as paediatric and neonatal intensive care units and a critical care transport team.

CUH is the tertiary centre for children and young people with a wide range of conditions including oncology, haematology and neurology.

This role will support Children's Services as we move into the future here at CUH with the development of Cambridge Children's Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post holder needs to have knowledge within this field and extensive experience working in acute paediatric settings, an understanding / experience of the development of patient services, experience of working with children and their families undergoing care for both acute and chronic conditions.

Person Specification







Qualifications

Essential

- RSCN / RN Child
- First Degree (or equivalent level) in nursing or health-related subject
- Teaching and Assessing qualification
- Evidence of on-going CPD
- Advanced safeguarding training
- Post registration qualification in relevant subject

Desirable

- Post-graduate Masters
- Independent prescriber
- Clinical assessment skills
- Advanced communication skills

Experience

Essential

- Working with acute and chronically ill children and young people
- Evidence of having worked collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team
- Experience of caring for children who are preparing for a transplant OR children with a non-malignant haematology diagnosis






- Demonstrate a commitment to teaching colleagues / students and involvement in mentorship
- Experience of managing a caseload

Desirable

- Experience of working with both cohorts of patients : children who are preparing for a transplant and children with a non-malignant haematology diagnosis
- Experience as a clinical nurse specialist
- Experience of audit and research
- Experience of working autonomously

Knowledge

Essential

- Demonstrate an understanding of relevant national policy and guideline relating to paediatric apheresis
- Demonstrate an understanding of how specialist haemaglobinopathy services are set up across the region
- Knowledge and experience of cross organisational working
- Experience of service development

Desirable

- Experience in developing a new service






- Experience in developing care pathways and patient information

Skills

Essential

- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Skills of diplomacy and negotiation
- Well-developed organisational and planning ability, able to prioritise and delegate
- Maintain a flexible attitude to change
- Demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team and build good relationships
- Computer literate
- Ability to manage performance of staff, change management and conflict

- Phlebotomy skills
- Experience of using EPIC
